In my youth, my mother often seemed to me to be an unbearably wicked woman. She “ruthlessly” filtered my friends, never allowing me to associate with anyone who could possibly contaminate my life, or the dream of the future my mother envisioned for me.
Although she frequently embarrassed me, and often frustrated my siblings and I, she would always tell us that we were not like any other children and that she did everything she did because she loved us. I never quite understood what my mother meant until I became a man, and was able to look back over my upbringing and the values that my mother instilled in me. In essence, what my mother raised me to understand was that character maketh a man.
