It is easy to think that, due to the rapid changes in technology, the globalization of markets and the complex and dangerous world political picture, we need to find new management theories without which we are lost! In reality we need to find ways to implement and build upon existing sound theories and concepts. Recent failures such as Enron, et al, the bursting of the Tech Bubble and even the space shuttle accident and the subsequent report on NASA, continue to make this clear. Which of these would have occurred if sound management practices had been implemented?
The basic management functions of organizing, leading, planning and controlling may need to be somewhat redefined and more difficult to practice given the speed of the environment, but historic models continue to provide a foundation for the future. The references noted in this book are intended to serve two purposes. First, to demonstrate that it is often not a lack of knowledge that constrains us, but a lack of action (just look at the dates of the works). Second, to assist the interested reader in gaining further insights. By no means are these works the only ones in their field, but it’s a start.
The one factor in the management equation that has permanently changed is the speed of everything in our lives. This necessitates that we better understand and improve upon our ability to practice the basic functions of management. To do this a system must exist to identify and anticipate opportunities and threats, and to focus the organization’s resources. It has often been said in sports that “speed kills.” In business speed has become your best weapon and greatest concern. Here, too, speed kills.

About the Author
Anthony C. LaRusso is a lecturer and consultant with over 30 years of experience in industrial and service organizations. Tony has held senior level management, operating and staff positions, including as President of major divisions in international companies. He has authored numerous articles on a variety of business subjects and was an Adjunct Professor of Management for 20 years.
