It was about six- fifteen P.M. when I pulled into the parking lot behind the drugstore. I was to meet Speedy and Hank inside around six. I pulled into the parking space I saw, turned of the ignition and the headlights. Being the middle of February, it was already dark out.
I wondered what the night might have in store for us. Thinking back to a couple of weeks earlier, when I met Speedy for the first time.
Television was still new and very few homes had one. It was viewed mostly in bars or storefront windows. The town had a malt shop, that had a ‘twelve inch’ set mounted on the wall and would show the wrestling matches every Tuesday night. Several weeks prior to this night, I had been talking to Hank, who I had known for along time, and he was telling me about this place.
“Why don’t ya’ come up Tuesday and watch the matches? There’s a bunch of guys there that you might like and the ‘rasselin’ is a lot of kicks,” he said.
Well what the hell could I loose, a couple of hours? I wasn’t doing much any way, so I went. It was laughs, sitting drinking cokes with a bunch of guys I’d never met before
The matches were about half over, when a good looking kid of about sixteen, dark wavy hair, sparkling blue eyes came in and sat next to Hank. In a voice much older than his years, he said, “Hi Hank, what’s cooking?”
Hank was too engrossed in the matches to notice anyone and just sat with his eyes glued to the box on the wall. The waitress came to the table where we were sitting and asked, “Anything for you Speedy?”
“I’ll have a large coke,” he said with a sexy tone in his voice and a big smile on his face.
She winked at him as she turned to get his order. He reached out and patted her on the butt. She only shook it a little more as she walked away.
I looked at him sitting across the table, smiling back at me.” That’s a bit of alright,” I said, with envy. “Do you know her very well?”
“Only from coming in here for the past few weeks,” he replied.

About the Book
This is a look into the lives of seven young men. Guys who hung out together at the local Drugstore, you know the kind.
Some of them had their own cars — some didn’t.
Some were lovers — some weren’t.
Some were pretty nice guys - some not so nice.
All in all, they combined to tell a story about the young men the locals liked to call the “Bad Asses of Garey Park.”
As a group of guys, they probably were, but individually, they each had their own story to tell.
Read into their lives and form your own opinion. Were these guys more like you were at their age, or were they really ‘Bad Asses’?
About the Author
J.W. Lambell writes about everyday people, like yourself, your relatives or maybe a friend. He writes about them, because he lived much the same as they did. Not quite old enough to join the service and still too young to vote, when this story took place.
He originally wrote this book in the late 1970’s. It was written by hand on a legal pad, put in a box, shoved onto a shelf, until just recently, when he decided to have it published. His most sincere hope is that this book will foster as many good memories for you, as it did for him. Enjoy....
