About the Book

Spirit of Freedom is an inspirational/devotional book inspired by the author’s service to our nation during her unit’s mobilization in Germany for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.  During that time she reflected upon the separation from her family, the uncertainties of world events in which she was a part, and her personal reactions to these events. 

This book has strong and universal sentiments that appeal to a broad spectrum of people.  It brings the readers closer to the feelings experienced by military personnel when they are deployed in support of America’s military operations.  It also brings the readers closer to the words of King David in his psalms.  The book deepens the readers’ understanding of God’s role in the lives of military personnel and the faith in God military personnel share.  It helps the readers to enrich their faith and their prayer life.

About the Author

            Dawn grew up in a military family in Ohio, Texas, and Indiana.  She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University (IU), a master of science in education from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Temple University.

            Lindsey Smith and Dawn, fellow Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, married the summer before their senior year at IU.  As a member of the first class of women commissioned through Army ROTC in 1976 (and possibly the first married cadets to be commissioned together in ROTC), she became part of Army and IU history. 

            The proud parents of two daughters (Shannon and Erin) and a son (Ryan) who share their parents’ love of God, family, friends, education, music, and sports, Dawn and Lindsey have helped them develop into faithful and responsible Christians.  

            After serving in the active Army and Army Reserve, Dawn was mobilized in December 2002 for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and served in Germany.  She retired from the Army in 2004, was accepted for retiree recall to active duty in 2005, and is still serving our country during war.  Shannon is a first lieutenant currently serving with the 101^st Airborne Division in Iraq.
