About the Author
Dawn grew up in a military family in Ohio, Texas, and Indiana. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University (IU), a master of science in education from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Temple University.
Lindsey Smith and Dawn, fellow Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets, married the summer before their senior year at IU. As a member of the first class of women commissioned through Army ROTC in 1976 (and possibly the first married cadets to be commissioned together in ROTC), she became part of Army and IU history.
The proud parents of two daughters (Shannon and Erin) and a son (Ryan) who share their parents’ love of God, family, friends, education, music, and sports, Dawn and Lindsey have helped them develop into faithful and responsible Christians.
After serving in the active Army and Army Reserve, Dawn was mobilized in December 2002 for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and served in Germany. She retired from the Army in 2004, was accepted for retiree recall to active duty in 2005, and is still serving our country during war.
