The next morning the sun was shining brightly and the wind was still. The frightful sounds of the storm were long gone. Realizing she had overslept, she dressed, went downstairs and put the coffee on. When Dan came down, they looked out the kitchen window and saw the gazebo in shambles. She couldn’t even cry. She didn’t have the heart or the strength to survey the damage just yet.
She dawdled around for as long as she could before opening the door and stepping out. She was dismayed as her eyes swept over the extensive damage. Splintered wood was everywhere, extending all the way back to the edge of the property where the woods began. The whole neighborhood had damage.
Stepping carefully over the splintered wood, she walked to the foundation of the gazebo. There she spied something that aroused her curiosity. In the midst of all the debris was a tin box, about the size of a cigar box, nearly covered with debris. She almost missed it. She took one step, sucked in her breath and took another step. She picked up a broken piece of wood and gingerly shoved the trash away from the box. With the piece of wood she gently maneuvered the box to within her reach. When she picked it up she realized it was one that had belonged to Emily from the time she was a tiny little girl. It was the box she had kept her hair ribbons and other treasures in for years.
With trembling hands, Linda pressed open the box. At first, she could see nothing, and then she realized there was an unsealed envelope inside. She pressed the envelope open enough to see that it contained a folded letter. She stood there and stared at it for a long moment, fearing she would be intruding on Emily’s private thoughts if she read it. She knew if she didn’t look to see who it was written to, she wouldn’t know to whom it should be delivered. She slowly and cautiously withdrew the letter. One quick look showed the salutation was to her and Dan. She dropped the letter like a hot potato. Retrieving it, she hurried to the kitchen, clutching the box.

About the Book

About the Author
Irene L. Speck was born near Williamsburg, Kentucky. She attended Cumberland College in Williamsburg where she met and married her college sweetheart, Hewett A. Speck. Together they raised five children.
Irene worked twenty-five years for the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Louisville, Kentucky and Memphis, Tennessee and retired a cartographic Supervisor.
Hewett died in 1983 after pasturing churches in Mississippi and Tennessee. Three years later she married Douglas Speck who died in 1993.
Irene made many Missionary trips to Japan, South Korea and Antigua. She spends her time writing, painting china, embroidering and quilting (note the quilt on cover of this book). She makes her home with her daughter in Newburgh, Indiana.
