With every step forward, the Center’s staff had to be more willing to live on the edge. During that first winter, for example, F.O.R. was turned over by the staff, all night, every night, for several months, to the street people; to the young alienated adults of the town. Homeless, they needed a warm place to stay on those cold winter nights. Through this program of “all night warmth and food”, F.O.R. achieved a good rapport with the young people, but not a good reputation with the police and the town’s “more respectable” folks. Even the town’s clergy were upset with the F.O.R. staff over this gesture. [And if truth be told, it was one of the most successful of F.O.R.’s efforts. It was a lesson for us all in what it means to live on the edge and trust. We literally gave the Center to the street people night after night, all winter long.

Under the late John Cardinal Wright, the center opened its main street, storefront doors in 1969, with little else than $3,000 a month budget, and the charismatic, volunteer leadership of its co-founders, the Rev, Donald C. Fisher, diocesan clergy, and Sr. Paulette Honeygosky, vincentian sister of charity.
