About the Book

My Mommy is a Giraffe shows young readers how other animal mothers care for their dependant young. The young reader learns, from reading this book, that human “Mommies” are not the only animal mothers that love and take good care of their offspring. Through the imaginary eyes of juvenile wild animals, we learn how various wild animal mothers, in their natural habitats, take care of their young, providing them, in their own special way, with the love and protection they need to someday become adults, and possibly parents, themselves. Young readers will also hopefully learn that it is the sacred responsibility of people everywhere to protect the natural habitats (homes) of our wild animal friends and to respect their naturally given right to live and share the Earth with us. Since humans demand and take so much from the environment, and as a result cause the most amount of damage to our planet than any other living thing, we are often the reason why many animals have sadly become extinct and many others are seriously threatened. It is up to all of us to help protect and nurture natural habitats, thereby insuring a secure future for wildlife everywhere. We must all strive to discover acceptable alternatives to our destructive lifestyles that threaten the stability of Earth’s many diverse ecosystems. It is never too early to teach our young children the importance of respecting and cherishing all the varied life on our little blue planet. Hopefully My Mommy is a Giraffe will educate young readers to the fact that it is up to all of us, young and old, to protect all the wild creatures that share our fragile planet with us.

About the Author

Sal Bonsangue has been a middle school life science teacher for over 30 years. For the past 20 years he has taught for the New York City Department of Education at a large, inner city intermediate school. Sal earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southampton College of Long Island University and a Masters degree from Kean University in New Jersey. He later continued to take college courses in environmental science and biology, eventually becoming accredited and certified to teach biology.

Sal is a member of the National Science Teacher’s Association (NSTA), National Geographic Society, and several environmental and wildlife organizations. On the weekends he enjoys volunteering his time to work as an educational docent at the Staten Island Zoo, Staten Island, New York. Sal is trained to handle non-venomous snakes, turtles and lizards.

Besides teaching, Sal is a part time writer and photographer for several local New York newspapers and a colored pencil artist specializing in wildlife art. His illustrations appear in this book.

Ever since he was a Cub Scout and later a Boy Scout, the environment and the protection of wildlife has always been an important part of Sal’s life. It has been his deep belief that nature carefully placed every living thing on Earth for a reason, and that it is our responsibility, as the present day custodians of our planet, to preserve wildlife habitats and not disrupt or disturb our planet’s delicate circle of life.

In his spare time, Sal takes pleasure in canoeing, hiking and exploring the lakes and forests of New York State’s magnificent Adirondack Park region.

“My Mommy is a Giraffe” is Sal Bonsangue’s second nature inspired book. His first book, “God, Lakes and Canoes,” came out in 2003.
