“That hurt,” grumbled Black Jack. Black Jack looked down at his bandaged paw. It was just a small cut, but it added to the hurt Black Jack felt inside his broken heart.
Black Jack looked at Mack, the driver, and said, “I am glad cats have nine lives. I’ve used six of my nine lives. That leaves how many? Nine minus six equals three. I have three lives left,” said Black Jack. “I must not get hurt again. If I do, I will only have two lives left. I am too young to have two lives left.”
Mack didn’t hear Black Jack. Mack turned right at a stoplight and parked his van in front of an old brick building. He slid out of his van and slammed the driver’s door shut. Mack stumbled across the gravel path until he reached the side entrance door of the humane society. With his clenched fist he pounded on the door. There was no answer.
Black Jack peeked through the grimy window of the van. Black Jack heard rapid footsteps. The door creaked. Black Jack watched as the rusty door’s latch sprung open. Black Jack saw an unpleasant blond lady appear from behind the door.
“Hi, Shirley,” said Mack.
“You are late, Mack. We don’t have much time before the people come. What took you so long anyway?”
“I’m sorry, Shirley. I am not used to getting up this early,” said Mack.
“That is no excuse, Mack. Next time think about the poor cats and kittens before you decide to sleep in,” Shirley replied in a piercing voice.
“Well, how do you like that?” muttered Mack.
Mack shoved his Yankees’ baseball cap upward. Mack frowned. The wrinkles on his forehead made him look mean.
Mack didn’t shout. Mack didn’t smile.
Mack just shrugged and said, “I could volunteer my services somewhere else young lady. Remember that. I don’t even ask for gas money.”
