FOREWORD
Now is March 2004 – Then is March 1942!
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be writing this book. My polio was all in the past, or at least I thought so. I’m sixty-five now, I should be enjoying my golden years ahead. What happened?
This book is going to be about what happened between 1942 & 2004.
I am living on the “old home place” that belonged to my husband’s family for almost 100 years. Noxapater is in the heart of Mississippi, a very small town that has one red blinking stop light in the center of town for a four way stop. You blink, and you would miss it, but it is a real nice town with some mighty fine people in it. The house is some where around 130 to 150 years old, give or take a few years. It has been fixed inside for a handicap person. A pole by the bed, handle in the bath room to help me up, a shower built in, rails down the hall way, a ramp built on for my scooter to come in and out, a lift chair to help me sit down and get up, and a beautiful support dog to pick up everything I drop. My wonderful husband is the best helper of all.
It’s hard to believe that my life has changed so quickly. “What happened?” you ask. “Post-Polio-Syndrome.” “What is that?” That is the question that a lot of people are asking....especially me.
In this book I want to share my experiences of my life and how polio not only effected my life in 1942, but how it is again touching my body in the form of post-polio-syndrome in 2004, and the effects it has on me now.
I want people to understand why I am no longer the active woman I use to be, and why I am dependent upon the help of my friends and my beloved family.
Go with me as I reach back into my life seeking to share the walk of a polio survivor of the 1940’s, to a post-polio survivor of 2004. I want you to know that I give God the glory in both survivor stories.

My story is about my life as a polio survivor of the 1940’s.
Growing up in a big city and coping with a crippling
disease that touched my life twice and
then came back to touch me again
My life as a child, teenager and young adult and
the challenges I had to face. I thought the polio was
far behind me but now I am dealing with something
few have heard of called “Post-Polio-Syndrome”
I am writing this book to help people understand what
is happening to many of the PPS survivors of the 40’s.
My special dog Jinx and a wonderful husband and family
helps me to keep-on-keeping-on.
