A patient once came into my office upset that she could not lose weight, no matter how hard she tried or what she did. She had tried this diet and that diet. She had bought exercise equipment specifically to work on various parts of her body. She had tried medications and supplements, but still she could not lose weight, or if she did, she gained it all back. She was desperate for an answer to the question: “What is wrong with my body; why am I still fat?
Physicians now know with scientific certainty that obesity is at least in part a chemical, or hormonal disease with multiple causes and influences. Coming into play are multiple psychological factors as well; some of these are chemically influenced. But we do not know enough to have a chemical treatment that will really work. Even though an easy treatment is not here yet, I do imagine a time in the future when we will be able to do a blood test and find out which type of obesity you have, and then decide what type of treatment you will need.
