This book is unique, awesome and well written. Finally, a book from an African that reads like the “Root” is here. This is the first book that I have read that brought much insight to the history of slavery from the African perspective. Usually African people I spoke with about our roll in the Slave trade shy away from the issue hoping that it would disappear. Although Blessings is an American citizen of African origin, she has done justice to a well deserving topic.
“It is an evil day my son” is educational, fun to read and it takes you on a journey with a people of the far past. This wonderful book catapults your imagination to what live was in pre-colonial days in Ibo land. You looked into a genealogy of a people who had families and system of government until they were scattered and carried away. Wherever there is a family, a father, a mother and a child, there must be a system of command that keeps them safe. The pre colonial Africans had this system of government before Mr. Johnny arrived. Now the author makes me wonder what happened to those villages after their young and nobles were captured into slavery. What about the feeble ones they left behind. How did they cope with the after math of their ordeal? Were they able to recover from the effect of slavery? Was it harder for them to rebuild without the presence of their strong men? And why did those village people put so much faith in the gods that could not save them? Shame unto the worthless men in those societies who traded loyalty for royalty? Finally, the author concluded her work in beautiful poetry that served as a mnemonic to all that you had read, living nothing to imagination. This book is good. Read it and please get some copies for your dear friends they will appreciate it!
