The Fortress
A dog barks.
The smell of crumb cake wafting through the air;
a child’s laughter in the distance;
the sweetness of remembrance
as a school bus passes by.
A snowball fight;
A fortress of icy, white comfort;
frozen stars caught on red-knit mittens;
stinging cheeks and frosty eyelashes
spotlight a delightfully pink nose.
A pile of marshmallows floating
in a warm sea of hot cocoa;
the reflection of a heartfelt time in a passing sip
before a softly whispered prayer at bedtime.
Subtleties become the most significant.
Simplicities become the most complicated.
The fortress mimics the soul.
The familiar warmth of the icy formation
realizes the master plan
as the taste of yesterday
slowly melts away
and the hope of tomorrow blooms.
