About the Book

Ever dreamed of being another Mark Twain, or wondered what was up, or down around the next river bend, or maybe where does the river go? Or, better yet, what would it be like working your way to New Orleans, or maybe Pittsburgh on a river boat! In Once Upon a River, Garland  C. Shewmaker shares his own experiences and the thrill of success — against all odds — starting as deckhand and working up to pilot, then master.  This is a story of river characters at their best and sometimes their worst! A story of humor as well as personal pride and human emotion.

About the Author

Garland Shewmaker grew up in Carrsville, Kentucky, where he was  lured to the river early in life , by swimming in the Ohio river and fishing  at a place called “Skip-Jack Rock. As the river boats would pass, he and his chums  would paddle out in row-boats and ride their wake. After reading  Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi, he decided he would become a river pilot. With fifty cents and a change of clothes, sixteen-year old Garland started as a green deckhand.  Captain Shewmaker has spent  forty-five years as pilot and master, serving as master of the Mississippi Queen,  the American Queen, and  the legendary Delta Queen as well as on the barge lines. When not on the river, he spends  his spare time writing, golfing and traveling with wife, Mary  He makes his home in Kentucky
