About the Book
In this book, the author shares but a few brief reflections on a much larger story, that of the spiritual journey. Writing not only for himself but on behalf of many, the author speaks of what a growing number of persons are experiencing as a rather dark moment in their spiritual journey as Roman Catholics. Something of that darkness is expressed in the following sentiments:
- Spiritual needs and hungers are not being satisfied.
- The laity have no voice in the church.
- The gulf between the laity and the magisterium continues
- to grow only wider.
- ”Churchianity” has superceded Christianity.
- etc., etc.
As a priest who is sharing the story of many persons, it is our hope that every reader will see him/herself within the pages of this text. And for all who find these words resonating within their own experience of the spiritual journey, it is further hoped that they too will join a growing chorus of voices that are crying out for reform, renewal and newness of life within the church.
About the Author
As a priest, the author has an interest in and a passion for the spiritual journey not only of himself, but especially the very people with whom he makes that journey as a servant-leader. Outraged by the present leadership of the catholic church, which appears near-totally divorced from the people whom that body is likewise to lead and serve, this priest publicly resigned from active ministry as a statement of protest.
Shortly after resigning in January 2003, the priest returned to a writing exercise which was begun two years earlier. The result is this book, Holy People, Holy Irreverence: A Church In Need of Reform and Renewal, in which the author reflects on the personal and communal journey of faith, a growing spiritual hunger within the church and the failure of an institution to satisfy such hungers.
