About the Book

Little Doris Hanson lived in the lighthouse on Chambers Island, Wisconsin, every summer from the age of 11 days to 10 years.  Doris’s father, Sam O. Hanson, was the assistant lighthouse keeper in the early 1900’s.  What was it like to live on a remote island in a lighthouse?  Doris told of her adventures and unique experiences of the life of a young girl living in just such a place for much of her childhood.  Having lost her mother at the age of 3, Doris learned the importance of having loving relationships with the rest of her family.  Her experiences shaped her life and taught her self-reliance.  This is the story of one summer on the island.

About the Author

Karen Anderson Henry grew up in Door County, a peninsula in northern Wisconsin.  This area is surrounded by water with numerous lighthouses protecting the rocky shoreline.  As a child, she had a particular interest in lighthouses and was privileged to be the daughter of a woman who lived in a lighthouse when she was a young girl.  Her mother told numerous stories of what it was like to live in a lighthouse. Karen always hoped to write about her mother’s experiences.  She began writing the book after her retirement as an oncology nurse.  She lives in Sun City Center, Florida, where one never really retires.  Instead, it is a time for fulfilling those hopes and dreams that there never seemed to be enough time to do before.
