About the Book

William Martin, an illiterate black share-cropper in the rural South and his wife, Maria, move from their small farm to a large southern city in the midst of the great financial depression to give their two sons the opportunity for a better education.  They all face almost insurmountable obstacles to better themselves because of the segregation, discrimination,  subjugation, and humiliation imposed by the ruling white supremacy.  The younger son, Sam, is confronted with the daily challenge of either accepting his secondary life as a black or rising above his environment and being accepted as a person regardless of the color of his skin.  The injustices inflicted upon him and his family breeds a hatred within him.  How he handles this hatred determines his personal destiny.

About the Author

C. Vernon Hines was an attorney in Nashville during the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s.  He was very active in civic affairs as an Elk, as a scoutmaster and district chairman in the BSA, and as the teacher of a Methodist men’s Bible class for 29 years.  He probably represented more blacks in legal matters that any other attorney in the mid-South at that time and usually with little or no compensation.  Until his death in 1958, he was continually attempting to bring down the legal and social barriers that prevented blacks in the South from attaining their full potential.  Although the characters depicted in the book are fictitious, the events are typical of instances in which the author was called upon to provide legal representation against the injustices imposed.  The book is presented as it was written almost a half century ago.
