Sally took another look at Eagle Eye and then started across the street. Liz and Jim were sitting on the back of the cart and Eagle Eye was about to get the cart when he heard a voice behind him. He turned to see the sheriff and two of his deputies approaching him. He wondered what they wanted with him and his family.
Sally returned and sat on the cart beside Liz and whispered to her. “I think there is going to be trouble.”
“Why? We ain’t done nothing wrong?”
Eagle Eye heard the sheriff say, “Nigger, I want to talk to you.”
Sally said to the sheriff, “Why don’t you leave this family alone? They ain’t done nothing wrong.”
“Shut up woman before I throw you in jail.”
Eagle Eye Said, “What do you want Mister Sheriff?”
“Ain’t I heard something bout you boy.”
“Don’t think so Mister Sheriff, I ain’t from round these parts. I come all the way from South Carolina.”
“You one of them black soldiers, who fought in the war?”
“Yes Sir Mister Sheriff, I was in the war. Got out when the war ended and headed west.”
“I heard bout a gun totting nigger who killed a white man in Arkansas or was it Texas?”
“I want you to hand over that gun and come over to the jail house for a little talk.”
Sally said, “I wouldn’t do that ‘cause he intends to kill you.”
“Another word out of you and I will arrest you for interfering with the law. Now git, before I lose my temper”.
Before leaving she whispered to Liz, “Don’t let your man give up his gun if you want to see him alive again.”
Sally took her time getting of the cart and sauntered over toward the brothel. With no intentions of going very far she stood in the door of the brothel and watched the events about to take place.
Eagle Eye said, “Mister Sheriff, I ain’t never been to neither place.”
“I want you to hand over that six-shooter and come over to the jail house for a little talk.”
“You got no cause to arrest me Mister Sheriff.”
