What’s It All About, Anyway?
This book is not autobiographical, but it is about life well lived.
It’s about a time of riding a Schwinn bike up and down the sidewalks because you weren’t allowed to ride in the street. And about stopping the bike by pushing on the pedals in opposite directions, not by using some silly brake on the steering bar.
It’s about “dressing up” to go to school, church, synagogue, the movies, or just for a trip downtown shopping.
And about saying “Please” and “Thank You” for everything you ever wanted or got.
What is this stuff today about “time out?” You send a kid to his room for a period of time and call it punishment or a cooling-off period. Punishment my foot! In that room... in that horrible holding cell...is a TV, a VCR with DVD player, Game Boy, and God-knows-how-many tapes, video games, a computer, and a cell phone. That isn’t a time out...that’s heaven for the little yard ape!
Today if you are in a free-standing mall store it’s easier to find the salesperson than in a department store. Just look for the youngest person in the store with perhaps a purple streak in their hair, a pair of faded jeans hanging low on their hips exposing their tummy ring, and no name tag. Why would you need a name tag! Just look for the person at the front of the store near the register who’s on their cell phone and totally oblivious to the line of customers in front of them! There’s your salesperson!

“I Never Knew the Knife Man’s Name” is a selection of memories from the author’s one-woman show of the same name.
The show, which is performed for groups throughout the country appeals to men and women from Baby Boomers to Golden Agers.
The chapters of the book deal wistfully and humorously about the way life used to be from ice cream parlors with swivel seats and 10 cent cones to home deliveries, having a “colored” cleaning woman, simple food simple times, and simple pleasures.
