Before you can begin practicing real estate, you must first obtain a real estate license within the state you are practicing. The division of real estate in each individual state has established the required classes you must successfully complete prior to sitting for your license examination. Generally, these classes consist of Real estate principals and practices, Real estate law, Appraisal and Finance. These courses are normally offered at the college level and may also be available through a local real estate training center.
Please note; the classes are intended to give you a general knowledge of real estate and to awaken you to the complexities of the business. Most classes can be taken in a very short period of time and can usually be taken simultaneously. You will have to be alert, pay attention, take notes and study. Take these classes seriously, they are the foundation of your new career.
Upon completion of all required classes, you will need a sponsoring broker who will hold your license and whom you will represent upon being licensed. Your broker will supply you with an application to take the state exam. You will also need a current picture of yourself, a copy of your transcripts and an application fee. Your broker will submit your application and you will be assigned a date and location to take your state exam. Be forewarned, the exam is lengthy and tricky. It will usually consist of multiple choice and math questions. Many training centers offer a refresher crash course just before the exam. You would be wise to take advantage of this.
Note: It is not unusual to fail a portion of the test. If this happens, you must reapply and retake the portion of the test you failed.
Be determined to succeed. Follow your dreams. A career in real estate can be very rewarding. For sure, it will be challenging. Once licensed, you will have unlimited earning potential. How far you go and how fast you get there will be totally up to you.
