“You usually do,” she replied. “Why not this time?”
“Hank thought it was a good idea.” With a shrug of my shoulders, I added, “Should’ve known better than to trust his brain power.”
“Temporary insanity, maybe.” She gave me that mischievous grin and picked up her book about President Grant’s

Sitting in the cottage provided for our campus stay, we lapsed into a companionable silence knowing there was nothing we could do until we heard from the symposium’s director. Ellie returned to her book, calm and collected even though she’d found the body. My mind kept going back to Hank. My shredder would have received that letter if not for him. Stupidly, I listened to him and now we were embroiled in another mess. The next body Ellie finds may well be Hank’s, and it won’t take great powers of deduction to figure out who did him in.

Unhappy with having their vacation plans disrupted, Georgia and Ellie set out to ‘help’ the police uncover the real motive for the rising young historian’s murder by following the victim’s research trail through the 1920s. Wading through old newspaper microfilm, books and old city directories, they begin to realize that those efforts may not be enough to lead them to a cold and calculating murderer. The reason may lie in the past of one of others involved in the gathering of illustrious academicians, some of whom aren’t exactly what they seem to be and something much more difficult to research. The deeper they dig, the more muddied the situation becomes. And their efforts may lead to naught.
Unbeknownst to them, a killer is watching and waiting, prepared to put an end to their meddling if need be. As they move closer to the truth, the killer might just manage to do away with the problem of

P. J. (Pat) Stelzer is a semi-retired history teacher who spent twenty-six years teaching high school Social Studies, predominately American History. She currently is serving as an adjunct instructor at a local community college, but finds time to pursue her love of writing, both with mystery fiction and as consultant and columnist for RusticDecorating.com, a website concentrating on rustic home decorations. Prior to entering the teaching profession, she was a newspaper reporter, feature writer and columnist. She and her husband of forty-seven years live in the same circa 1830s house they purchased over forty-four years ago, something that has continued to encourage her interest in both history and decorating. The author is currently working on the third in the Research, By George! series.
