Like a sleeping dog, Ed twitched and wriggled his way through a dream of being chased by a howling beast. They ran full tilt through a dank, tangled forest and into an icy creek where he struggled over the slimy rocks to reach the other side.
Ed jolted awake, turned on his light and found a now empty water glass lying next to him. Cursing, he leaped from bed and yanked off the soaked sheets. The phone rang as he tossed them in the corner and he wondered who in the hell would call him at two in the morning, as he grabbed the phone.
“This had better be important.”
“It’s Peggy. Get over here right now! Bill Adams has been found drowned in a tank just like Bert Pail.”
“Are you okay? Where are you?” Ed sank onto the bed.
“No, I’m not okay. I’m squashed under a desk in a dark office talking to you because of my stupid promise to Mrs. Phillips.”
“Okay, Peg, take it easy. I’m coming right over. I want you to get me in there somehow.”
“Are you nuts? The place is bedlam, cops, a dead man, hysterical workers. You can stand out front like you always do.”
“Peg, you said you’d help me, you’d help Mrs. Phillips. You get me in there so I can find out more than the sanitized line
She was quiet for a moment. A good sign, thought Ed.
“All right, I promised. Oh wow, this is so wrong.” Then her voice hardened, “You’d better hurry. I can get a lab coat, beard cover and hat, and sneak you in the exit door on
“Yeah, okay. See you in ten minutes. And Peg . . . be careful.” Ed leaped into his clothes, tore out of his place and was on
At Ed’s light tap, Peggy opened the door.
He quickly slipped inside, and as he put on the pill factory outfit, he noticed that it fit much better than the one she forced on him two days earlier.
“Roomy,” he whispered.
“I didn’t notice,” Peg whispered back, but avoided his eyes.
As they stood in the cavernous warehouse area, she pinned a damaged identification tag on his chest.
Ed twisted the badge around for a better look. “I can’t read it.”
“That’s good. So long as you have some kind of ID tag on, no one will pay attention to you.”
She led the way through the labyrinth of large boxes and barrels stacked on pallets to the outskirts of a brightly lit area thronged with people. They paused behind a large forklift where Peg issued her final orders. “Stay away from people in lab coats like yourself. They’ll know you’re a fake. Stick with the production people. They’re not as well informed about personnel changes and will think you’re a new guy. When you get what you want, wriggle out the way you came in, and for heaven’s sake, don’t come near me while you’re here.” She eyed him anxiously and adjusted his hat and beard cover.

Unluckily, the bad guys will eliminate anyone in their way; age, sex, gender, or species are all disposable.
As Ed plunges into the case, he risks everything to answer those four critical questions and learns that age is only a number, siblings aren’t so bad, and old fears faced are old fears conquered.

She finds the escape into the world of her hero Eddie, the brash and reckless young newsman, a refreshing alternative to her daily life and whole lot of fun.
