The high cliffs on the other side of the road from the monument are where the troops waited in freezing weather to attack the village at dawn. The initial charge on the village was through a large ravine just south of the monument approximately ¼ of a mile through a creek bottom that led from the plateau to the river bottom.
During the battle, the Indians drove north along the river to the plateau where you are standing and to the higher cliffs across the road from the monument, and fired upon the soldiers in the village.
