About the Book

This Guide Book was written for those who are interesting in touring the battlefields and sites of the American Indian Wars in eastern Montana.

This book provides driving directions using a map, plus GPS coordinates and compass readings for the most advantageous view of these sites.

Each chapter is laid out by the name of the battlefield, fort or cantonment, location, other known names, the campaign name, date(s), principal commanders involved, forces engaged, estimated causalities, a brief history of the battle and the names of Medal of Honor recipients, followed with current pictures of the battlefield.  Interesting bits of information, data and observations as walked over by the author.

Author has included a copy of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 and a brief on the Indian War Campaign Medal authorized by the Congress some 42 years after the Indian campaigns.

Several biographies are included of the officers that served during the Indian campaigns, there continued service and where now buried.

The author has included other reference books and websites to review on the Indian War Campaigns.

About the Author

The author was born and raised in Beardstown, Illinois.  Served in Naval Aviation and discharged Viet Nam Vet. 1965.

Lives in Seattle, married, three children, BA from Univ. of Wash., 1974, with duel MBA''s from City Univ., 2000.

He became interested in history at a young age, when collecting WWI and II items with his father, J.P. Morgan.

He started reading the Plainsmen Series by the late Terry C. Johnston, which captivated his interest in the Indian Wars.  Read extensively and toured Montana, Wyoming, North & South Dakota and Nebraska to locate and walk these sites.  The richness for me is the research and then walking these Hollowed Grounds.

Any journey always begins with... the first step!
