Caroline stuck her head out from between the branches to see if the area was clear. From the back of the cottage she saw two men approaching and quickly stepped back into her hiding place. She watched them from the branches. She had difficulty stringing another arrow. One man ran into the yard where Mark laid dead, while the other went to check out the two men lying on the porch. She had to take some action, the cottage was burning and her friend was trapped inside. Her mind raced in overtime. Stepping out from her hiding place, she took aim at the man in the front yard, trying desperately to steady her trembling hands. She released the arrow. When the arrow was about to strike its target, a gunshot went off. The man went down to his knees, but she had made a mistake.
Hearing the gunshot, the man on the porch turned and saw Caroline. The gunshot caused her to jump, then freeze, instead of stepping back into her hiding place.
“Hey, you - don’t move or I’ll put a bullet through your head.” The man jumped off the porch, his gun raised and pointed at her. Caroline held her bow at her side with no other weapons to defend herself. Instinctively, as he drew closer, she jumped quickly back into her hiding place, reaching for an arrow. Several shots rang out, bullets whistled through the pines, one missing her by inches. The arrow slipped from her hand and she reached down into the quiver to draw another. When she brought the arrow to the string, she felt a sharp impact to her stomach, collapsing her backwards onto the snow. For a few seconds she lost consciousness and was disoriented. When her eyes opened, she was horrified.
The man bent over her, holding a rifle against her chest. He had a dirty smile and traced her breasts with his rifle. “This is gonna be a pleasure, bitch.”
Her body shook uncontrollably - she tried to speak, but no words escaped her lips. He moved the gun lightly over her breasts, then up to her mouth. “Too bad, you’re a good looking little bitch.” Her eyes closed automatically and her fingers dug into the cold earth. “Bye.” She stiffened and heard a crack, her eyes remained tightly closed.
