Paul's Place

Be transported through time spanning three centuries as this pictorial exploration of historic Poulsbo, Washington takes you from Native American fishing grounds of the 18^th century, through explorations, early logging, eventual settlement, and on to the growth and development of the 20^th century, all with a child's eye view of history.  Watch as this small community nestled on the shores of Puget Sound is settled by Norwegian immigrants looking for a taste of home.  Typical in growth of many pioneer settlements on Puget Sound, Poulsbo, unlike other early settlements, has managed to remain tied to her Scandinavian heritage.  "The skeleton of yesterday remains, shaping the dreams of tomorrow."

Paul's Place begs to be read more than once by more than one age.  Children will delight in reading of the "logging camp that grew and grew" and the adventures of young EJ.  Parents will enjoy the historic notes and tales.  Grandparents can reminisce over the pictorial evolution of landscape and buildings.  Sleuths of early settlements in the Pacific Northwest will be challenged to discover traces of the past still visible in storefronts now witnessing their third century of Poulsbo history.

When Judy Driscoll moved to Poulsbo, she was enchanted with the beauty of the village on the bay and intrigued with the history and tales of its early pioneers.  Paul's Place is the product of her love of sharing that history with her students.  Because her annual walking tour of historic Poulsbo was so well received by both students and their parents, it seemed only natural to compile her research into this stroll through local history.  This is her first book.
