About the Book

Story of a battle with cancer and the added fight with our HMOs and medical bureaucracy told through the medium of emails. This is a history of the my wife’s struggle with our failed medical system, the battles with bureaucracy and her brave fight to get the treatment she needed from the specialists and institution she wanted. I want to show that, in order to get the type of treatment you deserve and need:

  • you have to do battle every step of the way;
  • you have to take charge of your own treatment and monitor
    it every step of the way;
  • you need an advocate to stand and fight with you and for
    you; and,
  • you need the support of your spouse or significant other,
    family, friends, employer and the community as a whole.

I hope to show bravery of a wonderful woman and the support she got from everyone, the battle she fought. And hope that this will encourage others in her position to take charge of their own treatment with fortitude and courage.

About the Author

Maurice Levenbach and his wife, Betty, were born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. They emigrated to The United States in 1986 to start a new life away from the oppressive Apartheid Regime. After a long “apprenticeship” of learning to fit into a new society and system, Betty established her own business selling educational and environmentally friendly toys and books. Networking came to her naturally and, when she was stricken with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1996, her friends and family rallied round to support and help her. This is her story and that of her support group.
