“My God, Marrianna. I know it’s impossible to think it, but is this a kiss off? If that’s the case, then there is no reason for me to leave. It solves your father’s problem.”
She broke into tears. “Geoffrey, Geoffrey, Geoffrey. My heart is breaking. Go. Please go. And know that I love you beyond words.”
As she turned to leave, I quickly reached for her as she was retreating into the house. She tore free from my grasp, almost catching her hand in the door as it was closing. But I caught her hand and called out. “Marrianna, I love you.” Still holding her hand, kissing it again and again, I begged desperately. “Don’t let me leave this way. Look back at me and smile. Sweetheart, say goodbye.”
The door closed behind her, leaving me standing alone in the coming dusk. I stood there motionless, empty, near despondent. After some time, with a resolute determination summoned from a source, I know not where, I left the steps and retreated to my car.
It is said, They also serve who only stand and wait. And I forlornly emulated the maxim, the dark gathering close about me. After a period of disconsolate evaluation of the circumstance, I reluctantly turned the waiting key in the ignition. Within the moment, another faint, but sharp sound pierced my consciousness. Pip, pip. There it was again. I looked out and up in the direction of its source and saw a parted curtain in her upstairs bedroom window, revealing only the darkened space within.
Straining my eyes to peer all the keener, I looked in hope, wondering the nature of the asymmetrical position of the lace curtain. In a moment of gratification, a shadowy form pressed against the windowpane. There in the window was my sweetheart, Marrianna, bravely trying to smile. In a depth of devotion which I found indescribable, I sweetly blew a fond kiss upward to my sweet, sad, Marrianna.

About the Author
The author is a retired reporter and news director for an industrial trade journal. He has recently completed a creative nonfiction social study of two hundred pages entitled “The Ethics Of Love;” a Romance novel entitled “September Magic,” and a dozen articles of creative nonfiction, together with an equal number of short stories.

The author’s interest in literature is long standing, as his life psyche and philosophy have been both gratified and fortified by the presence it implies.
