I saw a Mom today, and she was
working in the yard. Her little girl had
been out helping her. And the little girl just wandered away and hid behind a
short section of fence.
Mom came back - came walking
toward her little girl. This little girl stepped out from behind that section
of fence - and her Mom said,”Hi!” - but the expression of joy on that mother’s face when she saw
her little girl was beyond description.
Her face - the smile on the face
of that little girl - how it lit up when she saw her Mom. And when her Mom’s face lit
up to her.
It was like two suns shining on
each other.
What a place -
this Tate’s Mill!
Clouds.
Now I know you’ll find this hard
to believe, but - we had a cloud cover over Tate’s Mill today.
But, - I think it was just so we could have
this afternoon.
It was kind of a cool day. Nothin’ nasty or
anything like that --
it was a nice day -
overcast
but not
gloomy.
But now getting close to sundown
-
I tell you
it is absolutely -
Astounding!
The cloud cover
moving to the east. And
the sun going down in the west.
And that sky is so bright over there -
I tell you -
it looks
like somebody’s got the high place on fire.
This Tate’s
Mill.
What a place to be!
Time is our friend here. We don’t have to make the time or take
the time to do things here. Time comes
to us.
‘Cause all the things that seem
important outside of Tate’s Mill are not important here.
Big house, fancy car, expensive
clothes -
Forget that!
All that we look for here is an
open home,
a warm hearth!
Someplace to put our feet up with
friends,
on a winters day.
A table to sit around -
coffee, hot cider.
Just enjoying
our friends, being with them.
We hardly take that time anymore
outside of Tate’s Mill.

About the Book
There is a story in everything we see. Too often, we look at life and fail to find the stories behind what we are seeing. Tate’s Mill is those stories. Those joys and places that we all wish we could d hold onto and go to, but do not take the time. The stories in Tate’s Mill are based on observations while on the road. Mostly in smaller towns where the pace of life does not always match what we see on television. And they can lead you to a place that can be very real. Add to those observations, some imaginings, some life lessons learned and some mind meandering on sun filled days, and you have Tate’s Mill. A mythical place? Perhaps. But a place where each of us yearn to be. A place where, if we’re open to it, each of us can find peace and great contentment. C’mon home!

Except for a six-year stint in
the Marine Corps, the author has lived all of his life in
