About the Book

Ever Since Eve is a humorous and emotionally touching book that will pull you into Italo’s world as a kid, as a teenager, and as a young adult. Italo, a Mexican-American Brownville native, is paired to go on a quail-hunting trip with Jett, a border patrolman from Mississippi. Before the hunt, however, Leo informs Jett that Italo has a strong dislike for border patrolmen. If Italo’s various encounters with the maligned snakes will not make you laugh out loud, they will certainly make you smile. Ever Since Eve exposes a little bit of Mexican-American culture in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the colorful use of the Tex-Mex language will intrigue you. Ever Since Eve is not a story about snakes per se, but don’t be surprised if you learn something about the fascinating creatures along the way.

About the Author

Italo J. Zarate was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas.  He and his loving wife Perla have been married for thirty-seven years and were blessed with three wonderful children, Yvonne, Italo Jr., and Zachary.  Italo served in the Texas National Guard for twenty-three years and was a firefighter for ten.  A quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “The world is like a book, and he who does not travel has read but a page,” made a dramatic change in his life.
At the age of forty-three he gave up his career as a firefighter and became a life insurance agent with American National Life Insurance Company.  His company offered him the opportunity to see the world and his determination to succeed earned him and Perla trips to Madrid, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, and several Caribbean cruises.  Trips to popular places in the United States were also numerous.  Since his retirement in 1998, he and his wife have visited Cancun, Rome, Florence, and Venice, with hopefully more trips to come.
“Ever Since Eve” began as a short story in a UTB creative writing class in 1975.  After his retirement and with the emergence of Microsoft Word, Italo was encouraged to add to his story by his son Zachary.  From its original twenty pages it grew to what you are now holding in your hands.
Italo is a nature lover by heart, and when he is not working as a substitute teacher, writing letters to the editor, or working on small woodworking projects at home, he and his four-legged friend, “Rocky,” enjoy visiting beautiful and pristine Boca Chica Beach.  But that’s another story.
