About the Book

We all have “characters” in our lives. Everyone has a different personality, yet somehow we all grow together, work together, and manage to love each other. The Energized Family is the perfect example of what it takes to be a family and work through the challenges of life. As you read, see if you know of any “characters” in your life that resemble Gloria’s artistic friends. If you find one of them, watch the others around him or her and see just how they deal with their personality. You might find a new way to look at your own friends and family. Later, they might find you to be quite “energized” too, in your own responses towards them. While Gloria, an artist, is on vacation, lightning strikes through her bedroom window hitting her desk she draws on. The artist’s tools become energized (the word used to describe them as being alive). Gloria’s paintbrush, pencil, scissors, eraser, paint pallet and ruler devise a plan to make a note to give Gloria the news of their changes. After all, with this plan in place she can read about their changes before she actually sees them alive, that is, energized. This is how we enter their imaginary world and they prevent Gloria from being “skeerd”. You will find this imaginary story exciting and refreshingly innocent. The story challenges us all not to compare ourselves with others but to appreciate our uniqueness, which is our strength. Everyone wants to “fit in” and “find their place in this life”, since it is energized with opportunities. Our family is our greatest resource. When we allow other family members to grow along side us, we, too, will become energized.

About the Author

Vickie Hodge Holt was born on July 31, 1956 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  Her interest in books began at an early age.  Her parents, Leland Page Hodge and Margaret Calvert Hodge, recall the kindergarten teacher describing Vickie as she “attempted to quiet the other toddlers at story time”, so she could hear every word.  Her son, Marcus, made a game out of making up new stories as a toddler.

Before graduating from Boiling Springs High School, one teacher, Mrs. Mary Jo Combs, encouraged Vickie to publish her poetry.  Many of her poems have been published in The National Library of Poetry.  Since her teen years, Vickie has written twenty-three Vacation Bible Schools, and seventy-three children’s puppet shows, which aired, on television.  The show received three Silver Angel Awards from Excellence in Media in Hollywood, California.  Seven stations aired the show including the Dominion Sky Angel Satellite.  Each episode was unique since it had an original story, written by Vickie, and illustrated by Linda Sue Brown, the show’s artist. Vickie also hosted these shows, as the main character, as well as performed through puppetry, ventriloquism, choreographed movement, object lessons, and much more.  Each element reflected hours invested in writing and designing original props to create each show’s theme.

Linda Sue Brown passed away from cancer just after sketching the first drafts of Brushy Sue. To bring the visuals of the story into focus, Vickie’s husband, Steve Holt, brought life to the story as its illustrator.  He remained true to the original drafts of the paintbrush.  The story would not be in print if it had not been for the sense of family and dedication that developed over their years of service, paint, and glitter.

Vickie finally slowed down long enough to give us a taste of adventure through the eyes of make-believe, a wonder she hopes our eyes never dull from even as the flickers glow brighter on those ever increasing birthday candles. Vickie Hodge Holt encourages children of all ages to “read what you enjoy, because the words in those books hold the keys to energizing your future”.
