combined with fiction. It is a story of mystery, deceit, forbidden love and
unintentional murder climaxing in a natural disaster. Why was the old Victorian
house boarded up and abandoned? What caused two spinster sisters to become
semi-reclusive? What secret did they hide behind the walls of the old house?
Why were the two sisters digging a grave-like hole in the root cellar? What did
the firemen discover in the old unused water closet?
One sister is strong while the other is vulnerable to the attentions
from a man of a race not like her own. Why did the

About the Author
A veteran of WW II, recipient of
two medals Roland A. Hammond started writing for the camp newspaper while
serving with the Army. A graduate of
He acted over radio station WPRO in the late 30's in half-hour plays specializing in dialect roles, the accents he learned he injected into sections of this novel.
He is the author of a book of poetry "Thoughtdrifts", three childrens stories, numerous articles for the Providence Journal and Sunday Journal, Yankee Magazine "The Caul" and second monetary prize winner for his poem "The Soul's Journeying".
