About the Book

“If Platoon grabbed your attention, A Soldier of the Second Civil War will grab you by the throat. It will also break your heart.”

-  J.D. Wells, author of Ultimate Justice: The Final Penalty

In August 1968 Daniel Cerrano was likely the most reluctant and embittered of the 82,000 plus draft-age young men ordered to report for induction into the United States Army. By March 1970 he had become a highly decorated combat veteran with a secret so terrible he would have to take it to his grave. A Soldier of the Second Civil War is his story: a shocking, never-before-published account of the most shameful slice of the Vietnam War and of the most heinous act of treason in the annals of American military history.

A Soldier of the Second Civil War is an intensely human drama that lays bare the soul of a man and a nation in crisis. It is a tale of inner turmoil and strife, of battered conscience and sensibilities, of manipulation and deceit, of treachery and treason, of betrayal and corruption in high places. It is also the gut-wrenching, frighteningly realistic account of one young man’s honor, courage and sacrifice in the most dishonorable of circumstances.

About the Author

For over 35 years, Dan Manrique attempted to satisfy his creative urges by churning out freelance articles and editorial commentaries for a string of newspapers and regional magazines throughout his home state where he developed a loyal following. During that time his uniquely incisive style and wit also found their way onto the pages and covers of several nationally circulated publications.

In 2003 novelist J.D. Wells recruited Dan to serve as the sole staff writer for The Supreme Report, an internationally circulated equine newsletter devoted to preserving and promoting renewed interest in the breeding and exhibition of versatile “All-Around” performance Quarter Horses for which both men share a common passion.

Still, according to Dan, “something was always missing” until, at the urging of family and friends, he finally decided to try his hand at commercial fiction where he could enjoy greater freedom of expression and find a wider audience for his creative voice.

Dan’s first novel, A Soldier of the Second Civil War, showcases his highly polished style and mastery of the art of storytelling. It also demonstrates his uncanny ability to take readers on an emotional rollercoaster ride guaranteed to make them laugh, cry and get mad as hell. It has also placed him in the elite company of fiction writers whose first works have been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
