Math and Reading Strategies are
taught in every classroom. However, can
all the students apply what they have been taught? After teaching in the classroom at the 3rd
grade level and being challenged daily by, what use to be the TAAS, now changed
to the TAKS Test Objectives, I realized that there was more that I had to do to
help all of my students to be successful in mastering the skills. That's when I came up with some strategies
that made the students process the information that was presented to them. I have been teaching for 17 years, and it
took several years to succeed in doing this.
Even after I came up with the ideas, year after year I revised and
modified for what I thought worked the best.
No one person has the perfect
solution to reach ALL kids with every challenge that they are faced with, but
the strategies that I have consistently pursued with my students have made a
big difference! Most importantly, it
makes them think and requires them to use the information that is taught to
them. Also, they are made to implement
their Reading Strategies throughout all subject areas. It has worked for me, continuously resulting
in high TAAS, and now TAKS scores, and it can work for you and your
students.

is an excellent book that will benefit both the student and the teacher. It contains various strategies that will
enhance students’ reading and math skills greatly! The strategies are designed to make the
students process information. There is a
lot of terminology used to help associate the skills or objectives being
taught. The terminology is highlighted
at the beginning of the book so that it can be used as a reference. This is very crucial and extremely helpful as
students move up from one grade to another, or new teachers come into the
system. As the terminology and
strategies are implemented within a classroom, the students will apply what
they are doing in one subject area to all other areas. This is an outstanding process for
correlating your curriculum throughout the school or district. New teachers also benefit from this greatly
since everything is in the book and can be referred to.
The book has guided practice and
independent practice sheets for each strategy being taught in math and reading.
Posters are also available to
order. They will provide you with
visuals you can display in your classroom to help teach the strategies that all
your students must have.
About the Author
Diane Stegall
is currently an elementary teacher. She
has taught 3rd grade for 15 years.
Diane has had 2 poems published and writes dedications for wedding and
other special events. As an elementary
teacher for the past 17 years, Diane has been accountable for her students mastery of the state TAKS test. She devised strategies to help her students process information and become successful test
takers. After several years of trial and
error, the strategies finally became successful. Her students greatly improved their
performances using the strategies; therefore, producing higher test scores.
