With the Internet, E-mail and various books about money, why choose to write a book about personal finance? Well, to be honest, in 1999 I felt a calling to write this book. Personal finance is my ministry. I have a belief that if you want to enhance your own quality of life, you can do so by helping others. This book is the first in a series of three scheduled over the next couple of years. More importantly, this book is the by-product of my personal mission and crusade.

I concluded some twenty-plus years ago, while working as a private accountant for a Fortune 100 company that most people work for money in lieu of allowing money to work for them. After becoming a certified consumer credit consultant and a registered representative in the financial services industry for more than ten years, I saw that the average middle-income family needed to make more informed money-management decisions. This would mean earning income and keeping as much income (i.e. earned, unearned & portfolio) as is legally possible.
My intent with this book is to apply the “KISS” (Keep It Short and Simple) principle. I am primarily concerned with identifying some symptoms of being financially broke.
I will identify what you can do to alleviate this financial dilemma. Being broke is relative to each individual’s situation. However, let’s be reminded what economists tell us:
- If you lose your job, you will lose your car within three months
- If you lose your job, you will lose your house within six months
- If you lose your job you will lose your spouse within nine months
However, with more professional females being the primary income earner in households today, a trend among females is that they will lose their spouse before they lose their house.
This book is not meant to take the place of getting professional advice. It is merely a tool to help you improve the quality of your financial life. You can do it if you simply focus on reducing and/or eliminating bad debt, income taxes and excessive insurance premiums. Why do I say this? Well, applying one or more of these defensive efforts and some self-discipline will free up available funds that will allow you to go on the offensive and begin/increase your
savings and investment efforts. More importantly, the less money spent on interest, taxes and insurance, the more there is available for wealth accumulation. Thus, be spiritually wise and save for the future. As written in Proverbs 21:20: “Only fools spend everything they get.” We need to examine our life-styles and determine whether our spending is shortsighted and self-serving. We must not forget Deuteronomy 8:18: “But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”

Money. We all need it and want it. But we don’t know the different ways to get it, nor what to do with it once we have it. In the early school grades there are primers that teach us to read. However, throughout our school years, there has not been an effort to teach us how money works in the real world. This book is a primer that should be included in the personal library of every household. Learn how money works and how to manage it so that you can become financially independent.
Bottom line: the average middle-class family does not know how to make disposable funds available to properly invest for the future. The fact is, until we understand and apply practices that eliminate or reduce on-going expenses, middle-class Americans won’t begin to enhance their quality of life. We must do what is required to have disposable money available to save/invest.
