The old mansion was draped in long fingers of whispy fog. Here and there the mist parted to allow a glimpse of turn of the century elegance, a grand old lady long past her prime.
High windows overlook the bay. Lace curtains from another era protect the inside of the house from the casual or curious. Deep red velvet drapes fall from the sides of each window.
Caitlin mounted the steps and rang the bell. The chimes barely sounded before a middle-aged woman wearing a navy blue wool dress with a lacy white collar opened the door.
“Mrs. Randolph?” asked Caitlin.
A look of surprise covered the woman’s face but she quickly recovered. “Goodness no, I’m Eva, Mrs. Randolph’s companion, but you must be Miss Caitlin. Please come in; the Missus is in the library. She’s waiting for you.”
Caitlin was shown into a large room with a cheerful fire casting out the chill of the fog bound day. The lady seated in a comfortable chair having tea was much older and much closer to the image Caitlin had formed over the past several weeks of telephone conversations. Mrs. Randolph was a beautiful woman well into her eighties.
Her snowy white hair was swept into a bun at the nape of her neck and bound with pearls. Her nails gleamed from a professional manicure and a light coat of clear polish.

About the Book
Many of the stories contained
here were developed as the result of my life’s experiences. A few are pure fantasy while others were
created from the headlines of the daily newspaper. Some of my stories were developed rather
quickly when I considered a plot or an outline of how a story should read and
others took years to create just the right feel. Either way, I always get excited when I have
a new story. I know that part of writing
is knowing your audience. I envision my audience of readers to be about
fun, intrigue and mystery. I hope that
my readers have as much fun reading these stories as I had writing them.
