SUNLIGHT
Britaini
awoke to find that she was covered with a blanket. She rubbed her eyes and glanced at the clock
on the mantle. 10:38 a.m. As she
yawned and stretched, she could hear noisy dishes in the kitchen and a humming
Jamie. Moments later, he entered the
living room with a tray. "There you
are, all awake.
I would have hated to wake you.
You looked so serene there.
Breakfast is served." He put
down the tray, poured the tea, and handed her a cup. "Tea with just a
little milk and two lumps of sugar.
I remembered," he smiled, warmly.
She just wanted to reach out and give him a big hug and a kiss! She maintained, of course. "Thank you." "This is my way of saying thanks for
your attentive ear and losing sleep over my problems. I feel like we're forming a special bond of
friendship. Cheers," he smiled as
he held up his cup of tea.
"Cheers," she smiled as she touched her cup to his, and they
drank. "Mmm,
that looks good. What kind of omelet is
this?" she asked after lifting the cover from the plate. "Ham and cheese--frightfully fattening,
I'm afraid. But, I have good
metabolism. There's fried tomatoes as
well and freshly-squeezed orange juice – squeezed by my hands, of course,"
he grinned. She laughed because he had
such an animated face! His grin was
goofy. "You have great facial
expressions, Jamie. Your face bends and
stretches, like it's made of rubber or something." "I hope that's a compliment." "Of course," she laughed and then
took a bite of omelet. "Mmm, this is delicious.
Look at you--cookin'! This is jammin'." He laughed.
"Jammin'?
Is that the word of approval from you?" "Yes.
I'll only eat half because that's all my stomach can handle. My metabolism is cool, but I don't want to
slow it down." She sipped some orange
juice. "Jamie, if you keep feeding
me this way, I'll end up looking like a beach ball. When you're short, you have to watch
it." "I could never see you as
a beach ball, Britaini. Everything's so nicely in its
place." I can't believe I said
that! Britaini
took another sip of juice. I can't
believe he said that! "Thank you,
I'm not used to all of these compliments."
"Wasn't Eric good to you?"
"Sure, but it was different."
"Wot was different?" "When he gave me a compliment, it just
felt different." "In wot way were his compliments different than
mine?" "I don't know--let's try
these fried tomatoes," she said as she reached for the serving fork on the
platter. "You know, my mama puts
cornmeal on her fried tomatoes," she told him. "Is it me, or did we just change
subjects?" he asked with a slightly puzzled expression. "It's not
you." "Okay, I can take a
hint. It doesn't mean you're off the
hook--just for now, you are," he smiled.
He took a sip of tea as Britaini's heart
struggled!
After getting back to her suite, Britaini showered and refreshed. She walked around the suite in her red, silk
kimono-style robe, heavy in thought. She
picked up the telephone,
