About the Book

In the spring of 1986, Britaini Hughes receives her big break in the music business – singing backing vocals for the world-renown, British band, Double Talk on their next album.  The petite, attractive, African-American, 19-year old leaves behind her pompons and UCLA for New York, to begin a roller coater ride into the unknown and to catch a ride on a shooting star!

Andria Daniels visits her best friend, Britaini, in New York.  Andria, an English major at UC Davis, dreams of starting her own fashion magazine.  This two-week trip will grow into a whole new way of life for Andria -- a path of self-discovery and the realization of her dreams.

There are many gorgeous, tasty characters, but the life experiences of Britaini and Andria make up the nucleus of this book -- their rise to success in their own right.  Eating Venus is about attraction, flirtation, falling in love, sensuality, creativity, promiscuity, monogamy, obsession, grace, charm, and friendship.  This book plays out the dramatic, intense, painful, silly, blissful, and fickle issues that exist not only in the world of entertainment, but in life – no matter what race, creed, color, or tax bracket.

About the Author

Eating Venus has been a labor of love for Barbara Holmes.  It was inspired by her years of traveling and living all over the world as a professional singer, student, and tourist.  She received her B.A. in Marketing from the American College for the Applied Arts, and during her studies, she attended the sister campus at The American College in London.  She was a writer for her college newspaper, and she has written prose and poetry for most of her life.  Barbara lived and worked as a vocalist in London, and she sang professionally for seven years, which afforded her the opportunity to live, learn, and observe what truly goes on behind the scenes in the world of rock n’ roll.  Having the opportunity to meet and learn about people from other cultures and places has been priceless.

Barbara is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and she owns and runs a café in San Diego, California.
