I am
I am an individual
standing proud and firm.
I am a woman deeply
involved in African heritage.
I am a mother,
a father
fierce with protection
for my young,
spanking butts and drying tears.
I am a teacher speaking wisdom,
because our day has come.
I am a financier juggling bills
with little or no money.
I am a lover to reach peaks
no man has ever reached.
I am an individual
ALONE
I have stood unafraid to take charge.
I am a WOMAN.

My Place
I know my place.
I am at your side to guide you,
in front of you to protect you,
to the front of you for strength.
I lay beneath you for there is
no competition.
I stand behind you to give
a gentle push forward, upward
and beyond.
I strand close to you to hear words
of wisdom sweet and low.
My place is with you,
to gain strength and peace of mind.
There is no other place for me.

About the Book
In the Mist of Struggle Stands A Woman, is a collection of poetry written by Antoinette V. Franklin. This collection speaks of the struggle of an African American Woman “bearing the burden of resentment” and learning the essence of being a woman.
“No one loves a strong woman, she is envied ridiculed, taunted, but she moves forward, toward a new destiny, toward the struggle., …A weaker woman would have perished, wilted like grass, after a fire. A Woman stands in the mist of struggle.

Ms Franklin is the proud mother of Alexis Rose Franklin, enjoys reading and writing poetry and short stories, watching old movies and listening to jazz.
She has received numerous awards of merit from Iliad Press, The National Library of Poetry. The latest awards being an Honorable Mention and The Editor’s Choice Awards for Poetry Iliad Press. She received an honorable mention from The San Antonio Poetry Association and placed second as Poet Laureate. Her poem “Speaking Wisdom” is continuously displayed at the Watson Fine Arts Center St. Philips College,
