“Ja, I am Vander Koning. Vaht for am I oonder dis arrest?” he said in his broken English. “Conspiracy,” came the angry reply. “Vaht iss daht vordt. I oonderstant it not.” “Silence, foreign scum! You are a threat to our society.” The veins in his neck were bulging and his face turned an intense bluish red. “We are taking everything. Start loading up!” The crewmen began loading everything into the vans. “Nay, You cannot take dees tings from me,” Papa objected. “Dey belong to me!” “Shut up, old man.” The leader reached beneath his lapel, pulled out a pistol and whipped Papa across the left temple, opening a profusely bleeding wound. “You have no rights here!” “Diss iss “Traitors aren’t citizens! You have no rights here!” Danny, returning from his errand jumped behind the neighbor’s arbovitae and watched in silence. “Traitor? I am no…” Papa fell silent from another blow. The suited man pulled Papa into the black sedan and drove away as clandestinely as he had arrived. The vans had all gone with everything Papa had in his workshop. Danny looked in the garage as he walked across the driveway. It was picked clean. Every nut and bolt was gone. It was eerily empty. “Ma, where are you?” he cried.

An ancient American Indian chief proclaimed that the God of this world would “curse your riches that they will become slippery to you that you cannot hold onto them.” It’s an odd, yet descriptive choice of words. When you consider every part of our worldwide economy is based on petroleum and derivatives, then the word “slippery” becomes appropriate. When a car runs out of oil, the motor seizes and disgorges its internal parts through a gaping hole in the side of the motor. Without oil (or the need for it,) our world is no longer functional. 1993 introduced an incredible invention that was a perpetual motion machine. Whether it worked or not was never publicly proven. “The Prototype” is a discussion of how such a thing would be viewed by the “powers that be.” Dismal as it seems, the world isn’t ready to receive such an abrupt change in direction. Every institution would blow apart at the seams. Oppression, even genocide are inevitable results of greed. There are those who would rise above the devastation, but others who would promote it. “The Prototype” follows the lives of three individuals who attempt to free the world of its dependence on petroleum. It takes unique talents to accomplish such a thing. Keith De Code, called Dakota by friends, is a hero waiting to happen. He sits at the bottom of his pit of despair. When a poker buddy slips him information just before dying, Dakota pieces everything together and steps up to the plate. What lies before him is better not known. He should certainly cower from the ensuing cataclysm. Dakota faces the consequent catastrophe, but is he good enough to overcome powerful nations and organizations with decades of corruption? Does one man have the power to overcome a world of evil? .

Love for his spouse, family, God and country provide purpose and intensity to his careers, hobbies, beliefs and articulations. Without this passion, any writing is just techno-babble, but with it… expression becomes focused and effective. It’s what gives inscriptions on a piece of paper depth and consequence.
Couple these things with his lifelong study of Romance languages and you get someone who enjoys the nuances of a phrase and the essence of expression. There are authors who write for deadlines and dollars, but in this case, you have someone who loves to share a story and perhaps inspire someone to be better today than they were yesterday. A good story is the spirit of sharing and the core of teaching. There are many great tales yet to be told. Mr. Bergam knows a few.
