Chapter 2
I stopped in front of Stevens’ door and used the heel of my hand to bang on it. “Stevens! You up?”
When he didn’t respond, I tried the knob and found it was locked. Well, locked doors have never stopped me before. Although I had a key, I decided to exercise my lock picking skills. Wouldn’t want to get rusty.
I opened the door, hit the light, and scanned the room. What a pig, I thought, as my eyes settled on Stevens, who was a lump in the bed. I stepped over to him and hit his leg.
“Stevens!” I yelled and he shot up in bed.
“What the hell! How did you get in here?”
“I walked through the wall. You’re late and your team is waiting for you.” I turned on my heel and walked out of the room. When I strolled back into the kitchen, I cleared my throat.
“Gentlemen, if you wouldn’t mind, I’m going to need to rearrange seating at the table.” I put Raul on my left with an empty chair between us and then took my seat at the head of the table.
When Stevens walked in, Raul stood and offered him the empty chair. Stevens didn’t have time to shower and I could still smell the alcohol on him. Hunting and drinking don’t mix and I don’t allow it. I needed to get some food in him and then assess the situation.
“You must have slept well, Stevens?”
”I did thanks.” He wouldn’t look at me, but I knew his eyes were blood shot. “Get some food in you. It’s going to be a long time before lunch.”
He reached for the plate of eggs and I nodded at Raul. I slid back from the table, got up, and went in my bedroom to strap my Glock to my right leg. On my left I strapped a ten-inch straight blade knife. When I finished attaching my small arsenal of weapons to my body, I stepped over to the edge of the bed and looked down at Edward. I loved to watch him sleep and even though he had done his best to kill me a few hours ago, I couldn’t resist the urge to kiss him. He moaned softly and I wondered if I would ever get used to the idea that he was mine. I fought the overwhelming desire to crawl back in bed with him. Unfortunately, I had to get to work.
When I walked back into the kitchen, I opened the fridge. Edward had one bottle of beer last night but I noticed four more were missing. I grabbed a Coke and sat back down at the table.
Stevens could handle four beers but my guess is he chased them with some Jack he brought with him from home.
“Raul, Skip and I will join your team this morning. Skip needs to learn the ropes of being a team leader. Skip, you watch Raul and absorb everything he does. I want you to lead a team by mid-season.”
Skip dropped his fork and looked at me. “Really?”
I smiled at him. “This ranch will be yours one day. You better know how to run it.”
“His?” questioned Mr. Williams.
“Yes sir. This is Skip Foster. Skip, Mr. Williams is one of your best customers.”
He smiled at Skip. “Good to meet you son.” Williams extended his hand across the table.
