During the next two weeks, other instructors with their cadets partied at the house of Bill and Jasmine. On each occasion, Jasmine invited him over to play the piano. When they met, the gentle touch of her hand, the raised eyebrows, and the soft tones of her voice, thrilled him. He sensed that she was affected by the same chemistry.
It was during the first party that a storm descended. Wind and rain rattled the windows. Jolted by a clap of thunder, they glanced at each other across the room. She raised her eyebrows and Dirk understood. She would be able to drive him back to the barracks in her car. His heart raced with anticipation at the thought of being near her again. Ideas about what to say and do fluttered incessantly in his head, like birds trapped in a cage. He wanted desperately to give them wings. He played a song from the musical, Carousel, and sang the first few bars of the tune in his mind: If I loved you. Time and again I would try to say. All I’d want you to know . . .
He smelled Jasmine’s perfume and thrilled at her nearness. She was behind him. He half turned to see her, but resisted the temptation to meet her eyes. Got to be careful.

In the midst of this intrigue, Dirk soon finds himself wrestling with love and duty when, at off-duty parties, he meets and is entranced by the charm of his flying instructor’s wife. A passionate, clandestine romance develops. If exposed, it could scuttle his longed-for flying career and interfere with plans to trap the spy.
