Introduction
“Mother” is a very special
position in a family. Mother is the
“Shaman”, Medicine Woman or “Medicine Mom” of her household, her clan. She is the reservoir of knowledge, keeper of
the faith, holder of tradition and uses all her available resources to maintain
good health.
Take on this position proudly and
learn to take care and nurture your family.
Keep them healthy and happy.
Remember, your family is the reflection of your time, energy and love.
I wrote this book with my
experiences as a mother and the wisdom that has been passed down to me from
generations of Medicine Women in my family.
These women were advisors to their own family, friends and
neighbors. As midwives and counselors
they used nature’s resource for the most common ailments.
Years ago when we had closer
tight knit families. Mothers and
grandmother and sometimes even great grandmother provided their motherly
wisdom. But in today’s hustle and bustle
and families moving apart, people having their children at an older age when
the older generation has already passed away, there is not this opportunity any
longer.
This inspired me to write this
book and share with other my natural motherly wisdom. This book I provide the very basics that all
mothers need to know to care for their infants (newborn to 12 months of
age). I’ve included natural
applications, my own recipes and my family recipes that I have personally used
for the most common ailments that infants experience in the first year.
For most first-time moms the
first day with your baby can be scary thing.
You will stare at your baby and wonder what to do next. I had many family members and friends in this
situation calling me for advice. They
felt no one really prepared them for what there was to come.
This book is great for the
first-time mom or veteran mother who wants to try a more natural approach and
just wants basic, simple recipes to get them started. I find using some of the older traditional
ideas can also be very economical and save you a lot money.
At the end of the book I provide
a section for your own notes. This way
you can write down what worked for you, any new recipes that you come up with
or someone gives you or even if you want to use it to keep the addresses of
stores that you get your products from.
It is like your own Medicine Woman book in progress. You can either keep this book for future
reference or pass it along to your daughter or sister medicine woman. I believe when you include some of yourself
with the basics of what I’m providing you in this book, it will be invaluable
to your family tree.
The ideas in this book you can
continue to use throughout the first year of life and some even beyond. In the Newborn care section is what you need
to know soon after baby is born. I provided
you with the most pertinent information and ideas that I found to actually
work. In this section I tried to
consolidate the every day things that are important to a newborn’s care and
those things that you have questions about that may seem common sense to some
but maybe not to others. I hope you
find this helpful.
After the first month other
things become more apparent. The ideas
in the Newborn care section of course you can continue doing through out the
infancy stage and some even beyond. The
next section on Infancy care is concerned with some things that involve more a
baby from over the first month to the twelfth month.
Those therapies that do have to
be tailored to your child, and/or require a practitioner’s expert instruction
and prescription are not discussed in this book. You will need to seek the advice of those
practitioners.
Please do not use this book in
replacement of your physician, and/or any other health care practitioner. Always consult with your physician about
baby’s ailments first.
I hope this book helps you on
your journey as a Medicine Mom. I had a
great pleasure putting it together and hope it becomes a valuable tool for
you. Enjoy!
