Refined As Silver
“For you, O God, tested us; You refined us like silver.”
Psalm 66:10 (NIV)
If trying to do things alone, we are as delicate as a
thread. As I think of the title of this book, A Collection
Of Silver Threads, I am reminded of how very fragile we
are if trying to live the Christian life on our own power.
We are comparable to very thin threads that can be broken
with a gentle pull. But if we get our daily strength through
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are as strong as a coil
of rope. “A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:1 (NIV)
When a silversmith was asked how he knew when the
silver was pure, he answered, “When I see my reflection
in it.” “Remove the dross from the silver, and out comes
material for the silversmith.” Proverbs 25:4a (NIV)
Refining silver is used in the Bible figuratively for
testing human hearts. This “refining,” which comes to us in
life as trials and tribulations, makes us strong and brings us
into His abundance of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, and self-control. We, as Christians, are truly a
Collection of Silver Threads.
Unchangeable
“I the Lord do not change. So you, O descendants of
Jacob, are not destroyed.” (NIV)
With all the changes that go on in our lives, it is nice
to know that God is not in the business of evolving and
changing. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
As I was helping my daughter pack her car to leave for
college in a faraway city, I was not ready for that change.
It seemed like such a short time had passed since her first
day in kindergarten. I tried hard to fight back the tears as I
waved good-bye.
It was hard to walk back into her bedroom, but I wanted
to see if anything of importance had been left behind. I
found myself sitting in the middle of the floor looking
around her room at the pictures of her life. There were
baby, preteen, and high school pictures. She had gone
through so many changes. I then wrote these words:
Heartstrings
Today I said good-bye
To my twenty-year-old girl,
She packed her car and left me
To give her wings a whirl.
I quickly turned my head away,
The tears I tried to hide,
