Much has been written about Billy the Kid, however, very little is known or written about his early life. What is known is that he was born into a nation in turmoil, with the possibility of a Civil War on the horizon; a time that would soon make it’s way into our nations history books. Not only was the Civil War imminent at the time of his birth, but the Indian Wars were still a major factor in our nations settling of the West.
Also, for all practical purposes, he was born fatherless, never to know the man who should have been there to nurture and case for him. His mother, by all accounts, was a hard working woman and did her best to provide a decent life for her children. It further appears that Billy was a loving and devoted son and stayed with his mother until her premature death.
Another thing that is provided by history is that the Irish, during this period, were treated as second class citizens and he, for certain, must have felt the wrath of those who held these prejudices. As a child we can only deduce that he must have, at some time, had to stand up to those who would berate him, thus developing his need to command respect, a major factor in the type of man Billy would grow into. Another factor lending itself to the man he would become was his need to find his own self-worth, an element that played a big part in his eventual life-style.
From what I can discern - from reading between the lines - Billy was, throughout his life, in search of an identity and, more than anything else, he wanted the respect of his fellow man; a respect that he gained and garnered in the only way he knew how!

About the Book
It is hard to explain how an historical account based on a true life person could have been written leaving out those facts that would substantiate the story. In my research for this book, I found that the real story of Billy the Kids life and death has, in fact, never been written.
As anyone who has researched any subject, for factual documentation to support their contention knows, that if such and such has been written, than it can be found in the facts present in its written documentation. Not so with the facts surrounding the life and death of Billy the Kid.
How did Billy the Kid meet his
final destiny - let me count the ways. I
cannot understand how such an important character, within our Western History,
could have been killed in so many different settings or versions of his final
demise by supposedly so many authorative
accountings. I am, to this day, still
wondering what all the facts of his death are!
Although my book attempts to answer these questions - I am not sure I
have succeeded. Only the reader can make
this determination!
