About the Book

What was life like as a young sailor, making your way in the world before the Second World War?  What was it like to be there – to live life, knowing during that time that your country’s fate depended on you, and hundreds of thousands of others – a generation who sacrificed themselves for freedom.  This is one man’s story.  A story of heroism; adventure, and life.  Here is a committed individual – a life whose glory lies in its humble tones.  Here is the story of a Naval career spanning more than three decades, in which the author describes his experiences as a pilot, flying first against the Japanese and then as one of America’s first test pilots flying the new jets.  Here is the story of the Navigator of the Navy’s first Arctic and Antarctic Expeditions.  To understand life as a member of America’s ‘greatest generation,’ you will not be disappointed by Captain Wolfe’s story.

About the Author

Author of “Naval Leadership,” a text once widely used at the United States  Naval Academy, and now in use by the Japanese Navy, Captain Wolfe now tells his own story.  A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1941, Captain Wolfe was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Three Air Medals for action against the Japanese in World War II.  He is among the first to fly America’s jets, serving as a test pilot at Pautuxent River NAS after the war.  He served as Navigator of Expeditions.  His second book, “Selected Readings in Naval Leadership” was used not only by the U.S. Navy, but by the Chinese (Taiwan) Navy as well.  He brings to his story the simple realities of a humble warrior, recounting the tumultuous events of his experiences in World War II; and his later service, taking part in some of America’s most daring exploits.  This real life heroism – the stuff which made our country great.
