About the Author

Vera Stanek was born in Czechoslovakia immediately before WWII.

She spent six decades of her life under the influence of historical and political changes in Europe.

The war and Hitler’s invasion in her country were just the start.

Shortly after the war the Communist took over and Vera Stanek remained closed behind the Iron Curtain.

For the next 35 years she struggled to survive for herself and later for the entire family. But she did not give up, trying to escape from the socialist country.

While the first attempt was unsuccessful, the second, sixteen years later, succeeded.

The entire family finally escaped to Switzerland.

Vera Stanek and her husband are now living in Lago Vista, Texas, for five years.
