A Tribute to Spock

Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) played one of the first non-stereotypical roles for an African-American in television, playing a woman of stature and respect instead of playing out a role as a simple maid.  In 1967 Martin Luther King told Nichols she couldn’t quit Star Trek because she was a part of Roddenberry’s dream as well as his own, a dream of the future where the world would show respect for all races and see equality between the races and sexes.  He then went on to tell her that besides that, she had to remember that she was fourth in command therefore she couldn’t abdicate her responsibility. Nimoy was once asked this question: Of all the Star Trek shows you did, which were your favorites?  His answer:  City on the Edge of Forever, Devil in the Dark, All Our Yesteryears, This side of Paradise, Amok Time, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Nimoy is a famous photographer who shoots art depicting nudes and near nudes.  His work was not accepted by many Art Galleries in Seattle and Detroit but was accepted in Galleries in New York.  When in New York, ask at the travelers bureau where you may view his work. Walter Koenig was once asked:  Kahn said he never forgot a face, meaning he had seen Chekov in the episode, ‘Space Seed’.  But Chekov was never shown in that episode.  How do you account for Kahn’s announcement?  Koenig’s answer:  Chekov was working in the boiler room at the time and Kahn had come down to that part of the ship after he had taken it over.  As Chekov was coming out of the bathroom, Kahn saw him, that’s how he knew who Chekov was. There is a town in Alberta, Canada by the name of Vulcan where one will find a model of the Enterprise.  There are also many other points of interest for those who think Vulcans are the greatest of all the Star Trek beings. One may visit the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk in a town called Riverside in the state of Iowa.  On the last Saturday of June the town holds a festival that includes a parade and other entertainment.  This town laid claim to the honor of being the future birthplace of Captain Kirk and has held its festivities every year for over ten years. Actors from the Next Generation always liked to play jokes on each other when together.  Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner used to tease Marina Sirtis by way of her dog.  Marina owns a miniature Yorkie named Scillogie and she would sometimes bring it with her to the set.  Once she brought it onto the bridge during a break and turned her back on the small animal.  She heard Frakes talking to it then she saw Spiner move back away from the set.  She then heard Frakes call out,  “Go long”.  She turned to see Scillogie balanced over Frakes’ head as he utilized the small dog as a football.  There was a great laugh over that practical joke. When Brent Spiner (Data) was asked what it was like to work with Leonard Nimoy he said: “Working with Leonard Nimoy is like sliding down a rainbow into a pile of babies.”
