INTRODUCTION
This book is based upon a true story--the life of a
Francisco Martin-Del-Campo, who found hope in the quest for America. He lived through a revolution and survived
economic depression; he lived through World War II, suffered social persecution
and achieved the American dream. He was an heir to a way of living that never
changed, yet lived through the greatest epoch of change human history had ever
witnessed. It may not be an original
story. It is a story that may lack
contemporary relevance. Nevertheless,
it is a story of the triumph of human will over adversity and tragedy; it is a
story of hope and delusion; it is a story of love and adventure. Here is a
story of the meaning of human life by the experience thereof. The tales and anecdotes retold herein were
collected over a quarter century, and are offered as a guide to understand the
unchartered terrain that is the future.
This book will serve as the final testament of a man
who, by numberless disappointments and the tortures of manhood, survived the
trials of life, reaching old age with the serenity that comes with having lived
and suffered a life to its fulfillment.
The theme of the book is determination amidst
overwhelming change. Through resolve and untiring, unwavering faith we can
realize our dreams, and the dream of our subject was America: of peace and
prosperity, opportunity and optimism, the
Promised Land.

About the Book
A thoroughly American story of struggle and final
triumph, yet unique in its scope and recollection, we travel through the life
of man, almost day by day, as he recounts the extraordinary adventures,
sacrifices made, and personalities met along the way, toward realizing his
goals. Changing times forced him to
move, and he wandered from place to place before finding his “promised land” in
America.
About the Author
Frederick Martin-Del-Campo in writing this book set
out to establish a connection to his past by writing his biography of his
father, Francisco. It was a difficult
process, but in the course of what seemed like endless interviews, he achieved
that link to the past, and found meaning in his own life. It is his hope that everyone may take a
spiritual and journey of their own, and find serenity by understanding
themselves in the history of their ancestors.
Fred is a native of California, and studied at UCLA
and LAVC. He is currently occupied as a
teacher of ELT studies while editing his second anthology of verse meditations
and two forthcoming biographies of extraordinary, though unsung and unknown personalities he feels will add
to the literature of American lore, due for publication in 2004.
