Prologue
Hannah
watched her attorney, Rob Adams, as he stood up for the closing argument of the
trial.
He
must have been the most eligible bachelor at one time, she thought as she
followed his movements. Tall, lean, and articulate. Sure of himself. What didn't
show was his kindness, his patience, and his sense of
honor.
He
picked up a yellow legal pad, flipped through several pages. He stopped and
glanced at the open page in front of him. An eerie quiet came over the
courtroom. All eyes were upon him. He shook his head and gave the pad a gentle
toss back to the counsel table. His closing comments would be unrehearsed.
Robert
Longworth Adams, Esquire took a few steps toward the
jury.
“Ladies and Gentlemen. Thank you for spending three full days with us. Especially since you were told that this would be no more than a
one-day trial."
Almost
the longest three days of my life, Hannah thought. She realized some of the
jurors were staring at her. Did they
think it was her fault the trial had taken so long? Would they punish her and
Sophie with the verdict? She looked at
the floor.
“--I
say that for a reason. There are a lot of attorneys. But, trial attorneys are a
little bit different breed, I suppose. And one very good angle, if you would,
that some of the finest trial attorneys use in defending a case is called, in
our vernacular, a smoke screen. And it’s called a smoke screen because that’s
just what it is.
"It
means that, when we have finished with the evidence in the trial, a good
defense with throw up enough smoke in the jury’s eyes that you can’t see
through it. They hope that you are so confused that you won’t know why you’re
there. And some of the finest attorneys around do that. And if they can do that
in your eyes, they are magicians."
