About the Book

Doing It the Hard Way is a book about how disabled senior citizens can break through the mold of loneliness, alienation and depression. It offers you, the reader, hope and a new way to live and fulfill your lives.

Six strangers meet in a rehabilitation/nursing facility as patients. They share a desire to give up, to remain invalids, to wait for death. Yet, influenced by a social worker and a mysterious eighty year old volunteer the six bond together, engage in writing their autobiographies and decide that life is worth living after all. They decide that they want to migrate to Western North Carolina to begin life anew, to live together in a communal life style for disabled senior citizens who feel the urge to create in prose and poetry.

This book is one of hope, breaking away from the bonds of tradition and offers the reader new and challenging paradigms, exciting new life experiences and doors to life's potential riches.

You will love David, Britt, Sadie, Ted, Gerald and Lee as they explore who they were, are and will become and you will see in these characters mirrors of your own lives yesterday, today and tomorrow. The book is about the elderly, but the theme is for all concerned with life.
