The referee blew the whistle, signaling that our game had started.
For the first quarter of an hour, we bumped, set, and spiked with great enthusiasm. We knew that we were going to beat this team! After all, we had had so much practice by ourselves when we have free time after lunch, and besides Emma and I were great servers. We always made sure the serves soared over the net but landed within the other team’s boundaries. We were sure to win.
When we rotated and the starting six were up again, Mari suddenly slipped and missed a bump. Giving a muffled shriek, I bounded over and backward-bumped the ball just in time to save it from landing on the ground.
I glanced at the scoreboard. St. Agnes was in the lead, twenty-three to twenty. It was so close. I licked my parched lips. St. Agnes sixth grade girls’ team will rule, just you wait!
Then it turned to twenty-three to twenty-three. I felt my heart racing. Could we do it?

About the Book
Journey with Jessicah LaGratia throughout her sixth grade year at St. Agnes’ Junior High as she faces changes and challenges.
Despite the threats and taunts issued by Lori Marvele that she had to endure, Jessicah learned to prove herself better than her rival. Hatred did not do its work---it only made the girls’ battle bitterer.
Yet in the end, Jessicah searched her heart and still found that she had been hard and frustrated. True, it was Lori who was doing the plaguing, but it was Jessicah’s want of revenge that continued the war.
Years later, Jessicah managed to realize, to think more, to think deeper beyond the surface, and she found a cure for her heart before it was too late.
Nearly everybody has suffered the torments of jealous or malicious classmates whose only desire is to hurt and plague. Many people know the force careless words stab others. Those words may be forgiven as time progresses, but it is hard to be forgotten.
Yet force cannot deal this problem. As Jessicah learned, patience and love is the cure for many a problem of the heart and soul.
About the Author
Lotus Chen was born in 1990, in Tampa, Florida, USA. Having moved to Taiwan at the age of three and a half, she has grown up among Taiwanese society, but she had Western education as well at her school, Morrison Academy Kaohsiung.
Starting at the age of ten, she had been motivated to write. Not just to write anything, but to write good books---books that will never sit for long on anybody’s bookshelf, but picked up and read. Following her dream, she has accomplished her first “book” at the age of ten about a hamster named Furball. It takes her plenty of time to weave out a novel, and she hoped that the world would enjoy it.
She aims to write some more books, but cannot guarantee when they would be finished.
She now resides in Pingtung, Taiwan.
